Two kinds of splices are used most frequently, the eye splice -- used to make a permanent loop in the end of a line -- or the short splice, used to join two pieces of line of equal diameter and type together. The eye splice is used for everything from a carry handle to a dock line. The short splice has one restriction: it cannot be used if a line will be running through a block, because the splice doubles the diameter of the line. A long splice will run through a block, but is not a stable splice.

Anchovies are commonly on the dinner menu for many game fish. Striped bass, rock fish and sharks are only a few of the fish species that enjoy a meal of anchovies.Since anchovies are effective and typically available, many anglers choose them as bait when fishing. Rigging anchovies can be a trying experience, as they tend to be delicate and easily damaged, especially by large hooks. The solution to this is freezing the anchovies to provide more substantial bait for placing on the hook.

Some freshwater creatures will eat just about anything dangled in front of them on a hook, including a strip of hot dog. Catfish, especially, go for hot dog morsels, probably because of the scent, since these bottom-feeders hunt by sense of smell. Largemouth bass may also attack a little wiener when nothing else in the tackle box seems to attract their attention. Toss a few uncooked hot dogs in a resealable bag for the next fishing trip. A few hot dogs might be cheaper than buying live bait.

The tripod deer stand is a long-lasting and affordable hunting platform. Unlike platform tree stands, which are made of wood, the tripod stand does not degrade over the years because of rot. However, it still has the comfort of these larger stands. It is as mobile as any climbing tree stand and much safer, as you won't be in danger of slipping on the way up a tricky pine trunk.

South Dakota is not a destination for elk hunting enthusiasts. Because the population of elk is small (around 2,000 in 2010), hunting licenses are only available to residents, and even then are allocated by a draw system. The town of Pringle is located in elk hunting country.
