Back to School Bulletin Board Ideas for Grade Five

The start of another school year always brings anticipation and excitement, both for teachers and for students, from first graders to seniors. Advancing academically gives students a sense of accomplishment. Bring these feelings of success and enthusiasm into your classroom by using a back-to-school theme on your bulletin board.

Starting Afresh

Use the new academic year as your theme. Put up the heading "It's a Colorful New Year!" with a brilliant rainbow underneath. Under "Leap into the New Year!" have a pond full of toads jumping on lily pads, or use any king of jumping creature: bunnies, kangaroos, crickets. "We'll BEE Great This Year!" could feature buzzing, smiling bees. You can adjust this versatile idea to fit any theme you like. Another idea is "New Year's Resolutions," under which you can put up balloons featuring all that students hope to accomplish, such as Learning, Listening, Growing, Thinking, Sharing, Reading, Studying and Understanding.

Seasonal Style

Let autumn be your bulletin board theme. Put up a large tree with a falling leaf for each student, or put up a list of fun fall facts with leaves. Try a heading like "Falling for Reading" with little books, "Fall into Science" with light bulbs and magnifying glasses, or "Having a Ball This Fall" with beach balls, baseballs, basketballs, soccer balls, golf balls and footballs. "Fall into 5th Grade" could feature little paper kids or stick figures jumping and falling into piles of colorful leaves.

Memory Lane

Let students showcase what they did during the summer on the board. Have them write essays about their most fun summer adventure, and hang them on the board, or invite them to bring in pictures of their vacation activities to hang under headlines such as "So Long, Summer!" or "Summer Memories" or "Summer Was Great!" or "Summer Was a Blast!" featuring little exploding sticks of dynamite or star bursts.
